Hi all… I am plowing through all the LiveJournals for the first half of semester and I am having a ball. Especially with first years who I have not really got to know yet… and their LJs are a mind-expanding, mind blowing experience for the way they put me in touch with their lives (outside Uni) and the way they educate me in the new powerful, intoxicating language of this next generation…. I don’t mean to make second or third years feel old… but I tell you what… the first years were a timid lot in weeks 1,2,3… go and have a look now at what is blossoming in their LJs… mindexpanding is not strong enough a word!
By The Way… BTW… you are all getting comments on various LJ entries that attract my attention.. so go back to earlier entries to make sure you haven’t missed any of my “oh so profound” comments!
But seriously I do love seeing so many of you enjoying the process of studying literature and finding a space to reflect on it here in LJ… a place where you also feel free to speak in your own LINGO AND feel free to try on your creative skates and sing poems, stories, reviews…. wow…
Now a question: how are we all finding WebCT this semester? For first years they wouldn’t know the difference between this year and last year… but for information we changed platforms form WebCT 4 to WebCT 6… it is actually quite a difference…. so what do you all (first, second and third years) think about WebCT 6 this year…. do you love, hate, endure… it… are there things you find your really enjoy… things you find causing a problem…. and how does it stack up say with LJ which is actually a completely independant (free) program that I am running INSIDE WebCT… I think most of you know what/where/how/ I am doing with this now…. so give me some feedback.. it is important.. because I will be your teacher (for good or ill) over your next 3,2,1 years… and it is good to get it right… so what do you, don’t you love, hate, like… etc….

WebCT is great.
One thing though -I use Mozilla Firefox as my browser, and i think this is causing the pop-up boxes telling me that my version of java is not recognised. Once I get rid of the boxes, there’s no prob, but if this IS caused by my using Mozilla Firefox, then maybe it could be looked into, as it does slow things down a bit, and sometimes shuts me down. This browser is used by a lot of people. On a low budget computer like mine, it runs a lot more smoothly, with less interference than internet explorer. It has some nice features too, and it’s free.

I’m really not liking the new WebCT at all. I’m finding that it is quite confusing and very cramped. The old version definitely ran much more smoothly! However one thing I do like about this version is that you can see who is online, and it has a chat facility if you need to ask any questions.

Is there a reason that we jumped into this new version, not all uni’s seem to be using it yet?

Sorry about the dispute, I know technical people think a bit differently, I worked for Telstra for a few years, they interpret our thoughts in technical terms and sometimes it causes overload in more ways than one.

I hope this ‘mind expanding’ comment about the content of our LiveJournals extends to the Catalyst Crew too! Would be really nice to read some of the work your other students have put in as well, for inspiration and just for curiosities sake.
As for WebCT, first time user, long time listener. (excuse the bad joke)Not quite sure what it used to be like. Some days it drives me mad, especially as it is the slowest webpage to load and likes logging me out often and indiscriminately. Might take Phil’s advice and try it with Mozilla as IE loves viruses.
Other than that, very user friendly interface, easy to navigate, nothing very mind boggling.

As everyone else has also commented on the wombat, I will too. It IS very cute, looks young- are you a WIRES person? Reminds me of the time my aunt accidentally ran one over, and had to go back to finish the job. Being a city girl, I found this very traumatic. Bush folk know it’s a fact of life.

I hope this ‘mind expanding’ comment about the content of our LiveJournals extends to the Catalyst Crew too! Would be really nice to read some of the work your other students have put in as well, for inspiration and just for curiosities sake.
As for WebCT, first time user, long time listener. (excuse the bad joke)Not quite sure what it used to be like. Some days it drives me mad, especially as it is the slowest webpage to load and likes logging me out often and indiscriminately. Might take Phil’s advice and try it with Mozilla as IE loves viruses.
Other than that, very user friendly interface, easy to navigate, nothing very mind boggling.

Yes I am a first year, and yes I have not used the other Web CT platform, but I have seen it before and it did seem to be less cluttered. Because I am a first year I never really had to navigate through the old one, so to me this version seems fine (despite the fact that it take fooooreevvveer to load sometimes). It gets a little frustrating when you have to click on 2 or 3 links to get to where you would like to go, and it takes ages per click..if that makes sense?
As for livejournal, it is a great little creative space where you can throw away the shackles of university life for a while and just write about whats going on and share you poems or stories..I think it is an excellent medium where students have a voice, even though someone may not contribute often in tutorials its allows them to still share their opinions.
By the way: that wombat is so damn cute..but I am sure it could claw the hell out of your eyeballs
