Christmas Day in the 'Tanic Gardens

Some of the C “Sacred Australia” Group, together with some of the friends of “David’s House” gathered with me and my two daughters (Hannah and Helen) at the Botanic Gardens for a late Christmas Lunch. Here is the gathered community (minus Ted who went walkabout)[and remember to click 2 or 3 times on each image if you want a close up shot]:

And here is Ken telling us all how the gathering was like a true Bush Christmas where all would sit in the shade of a tree in the 42 degree heat sharing stories about their lives and times, with the sounds of a nearby creek gurgling away in the background. Here in the shade of this wonderful tree in the gardens we were aware of the gurgling – as Ken pointed out to us – of the very first stream used to water the crops at Farm Cove. In this picture, Ian, Shayne, George and Johannes are spellbound by Ken’s narrative style:

Here is daughter Helen about to climb the fantastic contorted tree with Rose’s Darcy soon to follow her into its dizzy heights:

And here are Helen with big sister Hannah who is engaging in conversation with Ian who has all kinds of great plans to extend and deepen his creative writing skills at UTS; Hannah was sharing her experience of creative writing courses at Macquarie:

All the Christmas mangoes have now been eaten and there is an air of satisfied lassitude descending on the gathered picknickers:

That is until our peerless Thomas ( the Tank Engine) got up to give us Scottish renditions of rousing poetry and political speeches….

As the afternoon wore on we became every more deeply engaged in matters religious and sacred; in fact we were becoming the living embodiment of an afternoon of Sacred Australia, especially as Johannes told us something of his life-journey. Here are Ken and Ralph absorbing some of this powerful Christmas atmosphere:

Here finally is Rose catching son Darcy on camera as he makes his way towards the Queensland bottle tree. He was such fun to have around, especially for Helen who needed someone to chase across the Gardens!

Thank you all who came, making this such a memorable Christmas Day afternoon. We will all remember it!
Cheers
Michael

    Hi Michael,
I was wondering if the Hong Kong/Australia live journal exchange is taking place: if it is, how is it functioning through LJ. I looked for it in the LJ URL’s but couldn’t find it last year, though in saying all that I was massively embedded in the building of my website. I don’t know if you replied back to my last email on the 21st of Deceember (the last time I had access to ACU computers) through WEBCT, because I just checked the computer this morning and WEBCT is gone. Unfortunately I don’t have the internet at home, so I have to do all my computer work at ACU.
I must say that I had the most awesome Christmas. I found out on the 22nd of December that I got the public education scholarship: which means I have money to pay for books, HECS paid: but most importantly I will be placed in a school in a country town to teach upon the completion of my studies. It has always been my dream to live in a country town. I feel so overwhelmed with this blessing from God that I don’t know how to thank him. I guess the best way is to work even harder this year and honour the gift he’s given me.
Anyway I’m going to work on a new document to place into my website and read the critical analysis in the Charles Dickens book. Please let me know if the Hong Kong/Australia live journal is accesible and if I have missed the boat-my very deepest apologies. Hoping you have the most awesome new year.
    See ya,
    Marc.

Christmas afternoon luncheon in the Gardens
Happy Christmas and Happy New Year to Michael our lecturer, your family, Rose, Hannah and Helen and all Catalyst/Clements students!
Have been reading through Michael’s written account and memorable photographs of the special Christmas gathering. So lovely to see Hanna and Helen there. I would have liked to have been with you all – I had already committed to a luncheon at a friend’s place and she begged me to stay with her for the day. One friend drove up from Nowra and another unexpected guest arrived so I felt I could not drag everyone away or slip away to the Gardens myself .. .
On Christmas morning I realised how much I was missing everyone from the class, especially Michael, our lecturer.
I feel there was a special bonding during the year of Clemente/Catalyst 2006 students. When I mentally review the course content for the three semesters it is evident that we have been priviledged to partake in such an exciting and wonderous journey of art appreciation, history, and literature including narrative, poetry and drama. I sense we are all richer as human beings for the understanding, experience and appreciation of these subjects. I sense that what we have learned will form a solid base on which to build and continue to learn for the rest of our lives.
I appreciate Michael Griffith’s patience, generosity, enthusiasm and commitment to support us in so many ways.
We all have been wonderfully blessed.
Thank you so much Michael for everything you have done for all of us.
    In deep appreciation,
Regards to your family and regards to all our student class!
    Tani
PS: I have personally been distressed at my inability to keep up with all the work, and not to have been better rehersed for our play. I have felt quite burnt out in so many ways in the last few months and have been resting up since our performance. This is the trip into the city since Christmas and here I am back at the library computers at Circular Quay!
I look forward to hearing when Michael will be lecturing for us again and hope that it will not be soo long.
I hope we can communicate through this site during 2007.

MAKING FRIENDS WITH SOY MANGO & UTSAN
    Hi Michael,
I apologize for my ignorance with the Hong Kong LJ exchange. I had it fixed in my head that when you took down the names in class you would inform us through WEBCT, or there would be links in the URL’s list, similiar to The Sacred Australia Group. I was constantly checking the abovementioned. Anyway found your link yesterday and made friends with Soymango and Utsan, as well as posting comments to Utsan. Was hoping to have other friends over there in Hong Kong: the procedure explained by Soymango seems too complex. Why not just add a friend and take it from there. Posted these same thoughts to Soymango and Utsan. If you have any simple insights into how I can make more friends over there please let me know. Thankyou.
Hoping to here from you soon.
    Bye, Marc.

        Hi Michael,
So far no reply from Soymango/Utsan.
On a more important note, I’m sure someone was telling me you lived in Mt Kuringia. Dear God, yesterday I saw those fires, I hope to God you and your family were not affected. Please let me know that all is well. Will let you know if Soymango/Utsan does reply back.
        Bye,
        Marc.

        Hi Michael,
So far no reply from Soymango/Utsan.
On a more important note, I’m sure someone was telling me you lived in Mt Kuringia. Dear God, yesterday I saw those fires, I hope to God you and your family were not affected. Please let me know that all is well. Will let you know if Soymango/Utsan does reply back.
        Bye,
        Marc.

    Bye, Marc.

Thanks Marc for that report. It is precisely what is needed to power the thing along. You are right – it is too complex… let me know if you get a reply from SoyMango… we will try to streamline the task…. looking forward to next semester!
      Cheers
