Brilliant Lecture Series on the Importance of Story

Hi all- I just caught on ABC Radio an extraordinary lecture (the first of 5) by the well known Argentian author
Alberto Manguel. The program is on the significance of story in human experience. It provides a brilliant insight into the nature of language and into the powerful reasons why studying/ reading/ writing literature is so important. You can hear the lecture if you go to ABCs “Big Ideas” page and click on the first listed lecture (Massey Lectures 2007): http://www.abc.net.au/rn/bigideas/
You can find out more about Manguel at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberto_Manguel.
Let me know what you think about the lecture when and if you get there….
Here is the man himself:

Here is also a rather long interview with Manguel for those of you interested in his life and thought: http://www.themorningnews.org/archives/birnbaum_v/alberto_manguel.php

I only just found out about it today, when I did an internet trying to turn up local productions of Shakespearian plays.

This is terrible. I wish I’d found out about the play sooner.

We could have all packed something and had a huge picnic, with the entire ACU English community gathered together for 12th night. There would be coleslaws, and salads, and chicken, and champaign, and kids throwing food at each other, and somebody losing their keys, no there they are, and it seems like it would have been a stack of fun, and given that we were studying 12th night just the holidays, like it was meant to happen.

Do you think if we got the numbers, and maybe called them, and explained we were studying the play they might. . .

    Great stuff!!

    Hi MG
had a listen to the two lectures that Alberto Manguel has given so far. Can I say that he is so on the mark with what literature represents to us as a modern society and how in fact with time its meaning has altered. I particulalry agreed with his thoughts that stories enable us to recognise our own reality and in turn when we write or read a story it is giving us a perspective into the human condition. I am making an entry at this very moment in my live journal about the lectures.
    Good find MG!!
    cheers, Candy
